Eric De Vries RIP

Our spearfishing community has been rocked with the tragic news of the death of Eric De Vries over the weekend.

Eric had been diving Hunters Bank off the Kapiti Coast when he failed to surface from a dive. His dive buddy immediately raised the alarm and another boat of spearos nearby quickly joined the search. Eric was found on the bottom at 27m and resuscitation attempts on the boat and the beach failed. He was fighting a kingfish on his last dive and while the exact details aren’t clear yet (and may never be) it is almost certain he suffered a shallow water blackout.

Eric was a very well known and active member of the spearfishing community and will be very sorely missed. He was a hugely experienced and able spearo known for his careful approach.

All our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and three children and his dive buddies who tried so hard to save him.
